The summer times brings insect bites: fleas, mites, "chiggers", flies, spiders, and ticks. These bites result in small red bumps, small indurated spots, and even clear fluid to white pus filled bumps.
Flea bites are more common on feet, ankle and lower legs.
Biting flies frequently target the scalp and hair.
Mites bites under the socks, underpants, or where clothing is tight and binds near the skin.
"Chiggers" are bites from a type of mite. They do not burrow under the skin. True "chigger" fleas burrow under the skin in the foot and toe areas, and is due to a true flea that is hidden under grossly swollen skin - as if it had "burrowed". Fortunately, the "chigger" flea is found only in tropical and subtropical areas.
Supposedly, the tick causing Lyme disease is not in Michigan. If you suffer from an insect bite that has red patch surrounding it that expands with time, you should contact your doctor about Lyme disease. This is especially if you have been out of Michigan to the U.P., Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and the east coast.
